Trimming the excess hair off the ears helps some, I've heard massaging the ear helps some too but best I've found is the tape. Probably not what you wanted to hear
I put quite a bit of tape on (the wider packaging tape works pretty well) and if I put triangle cardboard on each ear and tape individually and then tape the two together that usually holds up pretty well - it’s just a pain in the butt to do.
