A couple of tips. You would be better looking within driving distance of where you live, this way you can actually see the living environments of not only the pup but the parents. This will insure that you do not buy from a back yard breeder or puppymill. Also, just because you pay a lot for a pup does not guarantee that that pup did not come from a puppymill or byb. There is one guy mentioned many times on this site that sells over the internet for prices in the thousands for tiny pups and the living condition of these pups are horrendous. There are quite a few that received sick pups from this person. Remember a con man is just that and he's good at what he does so not matter how nice someone is through email or phone means nothing. You are better seeing your pup the living environment for both pup and parents. If someone is not willing to let you see the parents. Walk away. Walk away even if the pup itself looks healthy. 9 times out of 10 this is a broker. Most brokers get their dogs from mills. Many states such as PA (The Amish) are the biggest offenders. They are the biggest puppymills out their, but there are also plenty in the mid west too. However, I don't think it's fair to group everyone from that state as a mill etc. Yes, they have a hire rate but it's unfair to say that just because you come from a certain area and sell Yorkies that you are a mill. A good clue would be if they sell more then one breed, many breeds to be specific and designer breeds. This is usually a good sign that they are a byb or mill.
If money is an issue - please consider rescue as well. On average an adoption fee for a rescue is about $400 and that includes the vetting, shots and spay/neuter and dental when needed. It's a win win situation for all. It's a misconception that some have when they thing rescue only has old or sick dogs or problem dogs. In many cases you will find a young Yorkie or even a pup. AND, even an older dog does very well since rescues are just so happy to finally have a loving home. They are in most cases easier to train as they are more inclined to want to please you. I have five Yorkies and all but one were rescue. Since most look for puppies, I like to use my Lilly as the "Rescue Poster child." LOL. She is a pure breed Yorkie that came to us at 13 weeks. She is now eight months and is beautiful, ears up, hair growing nicely and weighing in at 3 lbs. If you are interested in rescue you can go to
