New here, and new yorkie Hi. My name is Michelle. I am from Missouri. I have been a pet owner my whole life, it is honestly odd how many animals we have had over the years. The latest addition to my menagerie is Preston. He is a 5 1/2 month old yorkie. We also have a 3 year old bassett named Bailey, a 8 year old min pin/italian greyhound mix named Jefe (pronounced Hefay - spanish for cheif or big boss) and a 12 year old poodle/maltese who now lives with our oldest daughter. Her name is Sadie. I also have two aquariums. That is currently all the pets we have, although over the years we have raised an bred hamsters. We have had two rabbits that lived in the house and were litter box trained, and other dogs I had as a child growing up. As you can tell, we love animals.
Anyway, my husband really did not want to get another dog, but I wanted to get a playmate for Bailey, as Jefe is getting old and grumpy and does not want to play. I wanted to get a small but sturdy dog that could hold it's own with Bailey. I did not go out with the intention of getting a Yorkie, who thinks of them as small and sturdy? Anyway, I went to a breeder rescue approx 1 hour away. I went with the intention of maybe a cocker spaniel, or even a silky. I got there, and the first group of dogs was yorkies. I picked up each one of them and held them, something about this little guy just stole my heart. He was a bit dirty as they were playing in the barn when I got there, yet there was something about him that I liked. I took him with me as I went to look at the other dogs. They had silkies, pappillions, min beagles, cocker spaniels, blue heelers, and a couple others that I don't remember. Needless to say, the first one I picked up, I took home. We have had him since the Sat after Thanksgiving. At first I was afraid he would not be able to hold his own with our Bassett. She is small, but still weighs 39 lbs. Let me tell you though, he has proven a worthy playmate for her and will sometimes surprise me with his tenacity. He is large for a yorkie (that is why he was at the rescue, the breeder could not sell him due to his size was outside the breed guidelines.) At 5 1/2 months he weighs 8.8 lbs. The vet said he would expect him to get approx. 10 lbs when full grown. I don't care if he meets the guidelines, as I got him for a pet, and it is probably a plus that he is a bit larger, to put up with Bailey. My whole family has fallen in love with him. He has the best little personality.
Anyway, I posted a pic of him in the member folders. I am glad to have found this site, and hope to learn all the best ways to take care of my sweet little (big) boy.
