I have the same problem with smell though and short of shaving the hair off the back end (which is what I think holds the smell), I am working on a belly band that will cover the pad inside as well and is moisture resistant all but the area right where it's needed, so the overflow won't work it's way up around and onto his side hair. Hopefully this will work. If you are interested let me know.
I use the Poise pads to the extra thick ones and cut them in half...changing the pad about 4 or 5 times a day....the one problem with constant use of belly bands is one must be mindful of urinary tract infections


As for the urine smell...have you tried self rinse....or wiping them with baby wipes when you change the pad.
