Thanks ladies for the advice/suggestions. I'll try it. I see a lot of dogs that get excited when they see the leash and I want mine to do the same. I do let take them outside in the yard and just let them run free sometimes so I thought that may not be helping the situation. Maybe I shouldn't do that as often until they've become used to leash walking..
