So, is it okay to breed for tiny or not? THAT was my original question.

Glad to hear you treat your dogs well and you don't breed smaller females.

Shelby'sMom~You will get a lot of different answers to your question depending on who you ask. I am not a breeder and my experience is limited having only owned yorkies for 8 months or so...but, that said, I think science would allow that breeding a species in whatever size they happen to come in would be okay as long as you breed out the genetic defects. I have talked to many breeders who breed for small yorkies and they have been doing it for several decades or longer and have been able to keep the mortality rate low. These breeders are phenomenal and know more than the average vet about the health and vitality of these tinies and how to make sure they stay healthy.

I have purchased 4 yorkies who are all currently under the breed standard in weight. None are unhealthy or have any more problems than the average yorkie and this is what my experience has been. This is not to say that an unscrupulous breeder who is breeding just to breed as many small yorkies as he can to make as much money as he can without regard to the health of the breeding dogs or the puppies produced, is not having a different experience but I think it would be the same if he was breeding larger yorkies unless he is breeding small females which is unconscionable in my opinion. In other words a bad breeder will have bad experiences regardless of the size.

There are some who would argue and have stories of small 3 lb females bred to 2 lb males who free whelped lots of litters and think it is perfectly okay. I do not agree with this but I am just telling you what different opinions there are out there.

If you make an analogy to humans, is it like a 6'6" man and a 5' woman having a child? I don't know? Food for thought.
