I wash ours in a separate load and use regular detergent. I put in a couple of drops of bleach every three washes or so. So far I haven't had any issues with smell, but I rotate them out every day.
The ones I use are from Nancy - Little Bit (a YTer) and they would be very difficult to tear up!
