How long did it take to Toilet train your dog? He is 19 weeks now and he is doing pretty good going on the pee pee pad, he still has accidents, but he knows when he as messed the wrong place. As a puppy I truly feel like sometimes he forgets. But when he is pooping and I am standing there he will start to squat somewhere he's not supposed to, then look at me shake my head no, and then poop on the pee pad. get a bottle of natures way.
How long did it take to Train your dog the basics?
(Sit, Down, Stay, Come etc) I am very dilligent so as a puppy he knows sit, down, no, and lay down. I take anything he is doing and reward him for it and then teach him a word to associate with his action. I also use a command to give him food, treats, water, anything - he has to work for his food. Stay is hard for Bailey as he is an inquisitive puppy. He will stay for a little while, but if I used the command in an emergency, I am not confident b/c Bailey would want to come investigate.
Does your dog know any tricks? we are working on crawl, speak, and roll over. Repitition and praise - he crawls on his own so now I am teaching a word and hand signal i use for a command and I use hand signal for all the tricks too. when he barks i say good speak and praise him. When he lays down i roll him over on my own (he hates that) and then tell him what a good boy he is.
How long did it take to get your dog used to being brushed? I found a really good tip here on YT - if you hold them and brush them in the air they wont fight as much b/c they dont want to fall. I started doing that and then I make my way to the couch and brush him - he is finally letting me lift his head and brush his stomach - after he quit trying to bite the brush he is really cooperative now, with good days and bad days.
How long did it take to train your dog to walk on the lead? We didnt get to start any of that training b/c we have an apt and had to wait until he was done with shots. My boyfriend can keep him behind him really well and they practice stopping and sitting and then go, they do well with that. He likes to walk even with me and walk ahead and everytime I pull him back behind me on his harness and start walking again. He is going to get it one day.
How long did it take to stop your dog from biting? I let him bite on me until it hurts, then yelp and say out and walk away. He now will put his teeth on me and then lick it like he sorry. He gets rowdy every now and then but i think he is still learning to control his bite - he hates it when we stop playing so he is learning. My dog has a very strong will so we work on him everyday - with things I learn from this board.
Where does your dog sleep, bed or cage? He plays a lot and gets stinky so he sleep in his dog bed in his cage beside our bed - he alerts us when he needs to pee or at 630 am when its time to eat. He sleeps in the bed after his bath when he is fresh and clean.
Do you groom the dog yourself or take it to a Groomers? He gets his face, feet, and sanitary cut a petsmart - I getting the nerve up to get his first hair cut/trim.
How long does the hair take to grow, long time or short time? Still has puppy hair, but it can often look very disheveled. I say his cottony hair grows about a 1/2 inch a month or so..
How often do you feed your dog per day? 2x per day - 630 am and 6pm with a snack for lunch.
What food do you feed your dog? He has been eating canidae since he left the breeders, and he is very particular about the food he eats - all natural foods, chicken strips, I have to get them from a specialty dog store. He had kong filler the other night and he had an upset stomach, so no commercial foods for him.
What is your dogs favourite treats? Chicken strips, apples, carrots, cottage cheese biscuits.
What is your dogs favourite toys? strewn all over the house - squeaky shoe, rope, and key chain.
Does your dog need a coat to wear when outdoors walking?
(Proper dog coat, not just for fashion). If its cold to me then I will get him a jacket - i have seen him shiver when its cold.
How often and how long do you walk your dog? Even as a puppy I can tell when he is tired of being cooped up in the house - we try every day but it ends up being 3-4x a week for 30 minutes - tire him out.
Any other advice? Get a yorkie book and this website on hand, people here give great advice.
I hated my Bailey at first b/c all he did was poop and cry but I love him so much now and he is part of the family - it takes time but it is so worth the little progress I can tell we are making and are going to make. He is a little stinker, and comedy relief.
