These were my original thoughts, too. And of course, travel by air is definitely cheaper. However, I have heard others opinions that, depending on the company, travel by ground offers more personal attention....some of the services stop every few hours and take them for walks, play in a pen, provide toys and treats, etc. and in fully equipped comfortable vans (not large trailers like haul cattle or other animals).

The reason I'm looking into this is that on the last pup I shipped, there was a unexpected LONG flight delay of over 8 hours and I began wondering if there was a better way. Thankfully I am very picky about which pups I will ship and this little lady was very sturdy and resilient....but you still just never know. Also have recently read a couple of articles about the conditions in cargo on planes.

Anyway, the ground transport is something I really know nothing about, so was hoping to get some first-hand info.
