Good point. This is actually because it is professional quality and uses a mirror inside. The image doesn't actually exist until you take the picture, if that makes sense. The "clicking" noise you hear when you take the picture is actually the mirror snapping up and down to capture the image. It's called Single Lens Reflex (SLR) and that's why the quality is so good. You can even see the mirror move if you take the lens off and take a blank picture. (Don't leave the lens of too long or you'll get dust on the inside and have to have your camera cleaned!)
I think the few drawbacks, the size and such, are worth it when you consider how much better the quality is than point and shoot cameras. Hope that helps!
