It really depends on your price range. I think the best "professional" camera for a reasonable price is the Canon Digital Rebel XT or XTi. I have the XT (8 megapixels) and love it! I'm getting the XTi (10 mp) soon. The great thing about these are that you can buy extra lenses for different purposes and they are both fully automatic or you can use full manual settings, so you can learn as you go and shoot in whatever mode you are most comfortable with.
