It grows out as the adults hair comes in... You don't have to cut if 'off'. When it gets to the desired length, then you might want to trim it a little, if you plan on growing his hair, let it grow ... I had to cut Pepper's puppy coat off at nearly 4 months of age because his puppy coat was terribly frizzy and matting like crazy....
