I too worried about the same thing when I decided to give it a try with mine.
I was afraid that they will think they could go on anything like blankets, towels, etc.

So the first day I got them, I put one of the dogs on the pad to go potty. They did right away and it couldn't have been easier. They now go on the washable pads only, they seem to know that is where they are suppose to go. They never went on anything else like a blanket or something similar.
But you do want to try to keep the pad in one spot when they are learning so they will know that is where they are to go.

I will never switch back to the disposable ones, I just love the washable ones, best money I ever spent on pads.
