I really recommend iWork.
At first I was weary because I was so used to using Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. After getting used to using Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, I don't think I could ever go back to using Microsoft Office (except when I am at work of course!).
I am not sure of any free programs out there. Good luck!
