We put the x-pen on a piece of vinyl flooring. Ollies sells pieces (different sizes) that will fit an x-pen with some overhang of the vinyl. Costs about $15 a piece and lasts a very long time.
We buy a new piece for each litter of puppies. Keeps a "fresh" floor down. Less change for germs other things that are bad for new babies. The puppies can scratch no harm will come to the flooring. Plus they are waterproof and easy to clean.
