I had my breeder/groomer show me how to trim their nails so you take a little bit off at a time. She said that if you cut a little bit of the nail on one day you can cut them again 3 days later because the vessel will receed. I tried to make sure when I got my pups to play with their feet often so they are used to me touching their feet. You can't give into their yelping either, my Xena yelps everytime I cut a nail and I have never made her bleed, she's just a drama queen and hopes if she yelps I will stop.
