I shared my experience with another mom with a coughing baby recently: My pup had a cough that would not go away (the lingering result of kennel cough) and my vet sent me to a respitory specialist here in Chicago. He prescribed a low dose of hyrdocodone (Vicodin) for the cough. He explained that, though Archie's kennel cough virus was cleared up, sometimes dogs can't shake the cough because the cough itself hinders healing of the bronchial tubes and it's kind of a vicious circle. He said it could take several weeks or even months to clear up even with the medication (Archie's cough went on for several months). It took two visits to the specialist over a good month or so, but finally the medicine quieted the cough enough to promote healing.

I don't know if this is the case with your baby, but if your vet hasn't tried hydrocodone, it might be worth a try. Good luck!
