I'm gonna play devil's advocate here........
I have a lab and 2 yorkies. I've had an instance when my lab was playing with the yorkies and got excited and simply ran over them. Hobbs layed on the floor for several minutes and acted like he was severely hurt. It was my lucky day that he was NOT severely hurt, just scared. But I scooped him up and from that day forward, the yorkies are not allowed on the floor with Lamar when Lamar is in a playful mood. I had the yorkies before I got my lab and I had never had a big dog before and was not aware of the risks of letting all 3 play together. But now I am.
With that being said, if something HAD happened to Hobbs that day, would that mean that I should never be able to have another big dog while I have yorkies? I would hate to think that that would be the case. I learned my lesson that day and I've adjusted my lifestyle and training style to meet the needs of all my dogs, big and little, and it hasn't happened again.
Give the OP a break.
OP, I have no problem with you getting another yorkie puppy while you have a lab in the house. Accidents happen. I've had accidents happen between my lab and yorkies. All you can do is learn from your mistakes. Don't beat yourself up over it. My only advice to you, however, especially since you're strapped for cash right now, would be to rescue an adult yorkie that is bigger or get a yorkie puppy that will grow up to be on the bigger side, like 8-10lbs. Also, if you do decide to take on the responsibility of getting another yorkie, you are NOW WARNED! You now know of the risks of bringing a small breed into your home with a lab who has a reputation. You will have NO EXCUSE if something like this were to happen again. If this were to happen again, it WOULD BE YOUR FAULT!!! Just keep that in mind......and good luck on your search! |
