Here 's a few things that I can think of:

1-Make sure it is the right size for your dog. If it is too big they want to walk around on it.
2- An adjustable arm is the best so you can customize it to your dog.
3- a NON skid surface
4- it is your preference, but we have one that folds down easily and flat for easy storage.
