Yeah, I second (or third or fourth) the motion of using treats and praise. In the beginning, be satisfied with baby steps. If he walks a few steps the way you want him to, treat and praise. Try for a few more steps, and same thing. The secret is to quit on a success, then go a little longer the next day.
Once he gets used to the treat idea, hold it between you and him so he looks you in the face to see the treat. It teaches him to keep his attention on your face, not your treat hand.
