I work at an Elementary school in the office handling attendance and enrollment. I like that I only work 187 years a year, but get a check every month.......so yes, my pay is less but when you calculate the pay to an hourly rate it is not terrible. And being off a week at Thanksgiving, two plus weeks at Christmas, a week at Spring Break and then all summer.....well that part is great! We are not eligible for unemployment during those breaks. We get 10 days paid sick days to use each year for sick or personal business.
My mom worked for the school district for 17 years until leaving this year to work for a software company. She started at the elementary campus and then moved up the various schools as me & my brother went through school.....ending up at the high school before moving to the district office and working year around.
There is politics in schools and districts....but there is anywhere. The campus principal - as mentioned by TxShopper - does often set the tone for the campus.....as does the superintendent at the district level.
You do pay into Teacher Retirement and schools have good insurance programs.....so the benifits are good....maybe a little costly, but at least stable and dependable!
I am not sure what I will do at the end of this year.....I have graduated now and may elect to go into something using my degree.....but I sure hate to give up all the time off!
