Personally I don't think it is necessary to ever hit or swat a dog. I just don't think it helps with training. It teaches them to hide from you when they have to go. Plus, often times you see dogs who are hit by their owners and they fear and jump at their owner's hands.

I think the best approach is a firm "no", and take him right out to the pee spot. If you feel the need, also give them a time out in the crate.

Remember, if he peed on your bed twice in one day, you you made a mistake. It was his accident, but your mistake. You should learn his signal for when he is about to pee (circling, sniffing, etc.) and watch for them.

The easiest way to potty train is to take them out before they have a chance to go in te house.
