My vet told me to keep the cone on for 2 weeks to let the wound fully heal (my Tobi licked his stiches).
Even though it seems cruel, leaving the cone on is REALLY important.
My uncle's pekingnese (sp?) was neutered and he licked his stiches which resulted in a bad infection. The infection lasted a long time..and now the dog still has issues with that area.
