The cone does not need to stay on IF he doesn't touch his stitches at all. If you suspect that he has licked at or scratched his stitches at all, even if it was just one time for just a few seconds, then that cone needs to go on. I'm sorry if it seems cruel to you, but imagine what would happen if he didn't wear the cone and if he tore out his stitches. he'd have to go back into surgery and have an even worse recovery. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
