Teething does have a lot to do with it and yours is in that stage. You can try massaging them from the base upwards to the tip, that helps quite a lot if they'll sit still for it...mine won't!
Does your boy have thick ears even without the hair? I have 2 Biewer girls and they have thicker ears than my Yorkies so I'm going to start taping them today.
