Buddy did the same thing.
If I were home I would pull his crate to the doorway so he could see through
the rest of the condo and see me move around, this helped some.
When I left for work and he was in there and crying there was not much
I could do. Made sure he had his blankie, toys and treats but left him
crying

When he became trained I allowed him free rein of the condo.
Today at almost four he still cries when I leave
