I'd put the trashcan somewhere where he can't get to it - underneath the sink, in a cabinet, pantry, garage, or somewhere where you can shut a door and he can't access it. Although dogs' digestive systems are able to handle all kinds of gross stuff, constantly getting into the trash can be very dangerous to him (and a pain for you to have to clean up)
