Thanks. These socialization meetups I've been taking him to seem to be working wonders. The first week, he wouldn't even enter the gated area where we go. He had had a bad experience at an exclosed dog park when he was younger.
But I started by letting him wander around the edges away from the other dogs, then gradually he started showing more interest in playing. He's identified the dogs that play too rough and stays away from them. Plus he stays pretty close to me regardless.
I've really noted a difference in his personality. He's not so standoffish with strangers. His reaction to strange dogs is not aggressive. And he seems to know which dogs are safe to play with.
I'm still terribly nervous at these meetups, because all it takes is one big dog plowing into him to cause some big problems, but so far it's been worth it. I guess as long as he's having fun, we'll keep it up.
