They are well known, but I don't think they have a good reputation. AKC is the best registry in the US, followed by UKC. They are the only two registries that offer conformation showing. All other registries out there aren't really reputable...they'll register purebreds without any proof of them being purebred, as well as mixes. But if your yorkie is not going to be used for showing or breeding, registry doesn't really matter.

No, you can't register with AKC. You can only register a dog with the AKC if both parents are AKC registered, or if the parents are registered to another country's registry that the AKC approves.

The registry a dog is under doesn't necessarily show the quality of the dog though. They are only there to register the dog. There are a lot of out of standard yorkies that are AKC registered. That's why it is more important to look at the breeder and dogs they are breeding.
