Between the two of them with their scratching up (it was woven so they broke threads)a comfortable nest to lay in and the carp they drag in from the outside (dirt, sand, leaves and twigs)it got to be a mess. So, I just went out, purchased a dark maroon red one (plain striped cotton) figuring the problem would be finally solved. Now there are white stops on the duvet from where they lay and chew on their bully sticks, sand, leaves and slobber show up like crazy. Plus you can see every indentation from where they have walked and rested on the bed. I think the solution is to just throw a plastic sheet over the bed or just sleep on a mattress on the floor!
p.s. getting rid of them is out of the question
Ours is embroidered, and they catch their nails and toys on the threads too. My way to keep this at a minimum is to put another sheet or their blanket on the bed at night, or when they're alone during the day (They say in our room), and then any messes are on the sheet, which is easier to wash, and the snags are kept to a minimum.
