I like the step in Harnesses the best, they are VERY easy in and out! Cindy (chattiesmom) makes the silk step in harnesses and they should help reduce the matting.
I have 1 from her and she does a excellent job!

I also have about 6 step in's from "Cajun Canine Couture" and I really love them!
