i have a friend who uses a doggy litter box. her dog has actually never been outside and she is 11 years old!!
Lady was outdoor trained only until she was diagnosed with diabetes. I then realized I needed to cross train her so I put a pad by the back door where she always barked to go out. She basically had accidents on it at first, but I praised her and gave her a treat so she caught on. She still really hated to use them and would carry on like crazy in bad weather and hold it forever until she finally had no choice but to go.

Then I was in a car accident and broke my ankle, knee, etc and couldn't take her outside. I got an xpen and put it around her pads. I'd put her in her "potty pen" and praise her like crazy and give her a treat when she'd go. It took her about three days to figure out that this was an easy way to get treats!

Now I can't imagine having a dog who wasn't pee pad trained!
