My younger brother and I had bad asthma and were allergic to nearly everything and especially all animals (including stuffed!!). My mom was forced to rehome all of our furry animals (we got to keep the turtles, lizards, and toads). We got so sick shortly thereafter that the mom contacted the doctor. It's well known that stress can bring on asthma attacks as well as allergies. We were so miserable without our animals that it made us physically sick. My mom had to go round up all of our animals and bring them back home. She had to manage our allergies for years, but we just couldn't rehome - we couldn't physically live with that. Now, my brother and I both still have houses filled with pets. We did build up immunity to animals (I think by simple necessity).
I also had to rehome a beautiful yorkie girl a few years ago that broke my heart. It was a gut-wrenching decision and still makes us cry today. I would have kept her forever, but it was truly the best thing for HER.
So I've lived in both worlds that we're all talking about.
