I don't think it makes them fat. I've read when some yorkies don't stop eating. They just eat everything in their bowls. I think that makes them fat, but if your dogs don't go crazy on their food then it shouldn't be a problem. I might be wrong though.
If free feeding increases the chance of a yorkie being obese or fatter then SOMEBODY LET ME KNOW!! Lol... I wonder if I should stop that.
