Question Fireplace wood

This may seem like a no brainer question...

How can I keep all my little furbutts from chewing on the wood that I keep next to the fireplace? I keep a fire's worth inside so it will be dried out for the next fire.

Obviously I could cover it with something but I'm thinking that would look pretty tacky plus it would be a good place for any bugs to hide. I would freak out if I took the cover off and bugs came out to attack me!

If I sprayed it with Bitter Apple, would that give off harmful fumes when burned?

Any suggestions? I don't want to have to be running to the vet cause one of them has a chunk of wood stuck somewhere inside them.
