Poor baby! I would've practically jumped the guy, as you almost did - what an idiot. While it may be okay for young puppies to be picked up by the scruff, it is NOT okay to pick up dogs well past weaning-age in this manner bc their body weight is re-distributed in such a way that it is painful for the dog - so no wonder the little honey cried out!

The only way to overcome this is to train her and extinguish the reaction to the stimuli. You'd need a willing male friend who you could work her with - you could all get down and the floor, help her go to the male (like you're all playing), give treats first when she just approaches him, then give treats when she gets really close to him, then give treats when she lets him touch/pet her - etcetera. It may take a while, and more than one male - but she can rebuild her trust. Good luck!
