You are correct! I think that the reason the thread has gotten so many view is because it is such a hot topic and like you said, there was a huge debate among members a few days earlier. The same thing happens when you see something posted about any hot topic here....teacups, tinies, etc. Now that is not to say that the pups are not cute...I have yet to see a pup of any color or breed that wasn't cute, but realistically, I just don't think that is the ONLY reason for the thread's popularity.
And as far as the 'true meaning' of the word "mutt"--it is what you make it out to be. I always thought of any dogs that isn't purebred as a mutt...even if you know what breeds it is comprised of. To me, the term 'mixed' is a far worse term to toss around.
