Here's a trick to keeping them from jumping out:
Always open the "door" to the expen and let them walk in and out. If you never lift them into it, they usually don't think of that as an exit.
It's worked for me. Bernie climbs our gates but has never even tried with the expens.
Also, it's easy to make them smaller if need be, as a previous poster mentioned, just by the way you set them up. Removing and adding panels could become a pain, IMO. Just food for thought.
