the surgery he's talking about is probably an FHO. During this surgery the ball of the femoral head is removed. This is the ball that fits in the hip socket. I've see this done many many times and the patients have a great recovery rate. Right now, i'd get him on a joint supplement and do daily exercises with him to strengthen the hip muscles. Swimming is great! if he's small enough you can fill the tub up and put a harness on him. Then suspend him in the tub by his harness and let him paddle away. Only for a minute or two at first and then you can build up the time.
