I've never had a matt on Lacy but with my Persian Cat I've had some big ones literally develop overnight! What I do with a matt is try to seperate it by hand some first if it's a big one (gently not to pull too hard). Then when I comb it out, I will hold the hair tightly with my fingers near the skin (so your fingers are holding the hair in between the skin and the matt). That way the hair isn't being pulled at the skin (where it hurts). Instead the hair is being pulled from where my fingers are holding it. Just slowly and gently comb small pieces of the matt out at a time. I hope I explained it okay.
