I found that the best way to train a dog to roll over is to have them laying down and then (gently) use your hand on their side to roll them over while at the same time giving them a vocal and a hand gesture command. I usually use a rolling motion with a treat in my hand. I have trained both my husbands minpin and my mother-in-laws pom to roll over this way in less than 10 minutes. They were quite startled the first time, but after the treat reward they forgave me pretty quickly. Now, as soon as the treat jars open, they sit, laydown and roll over. hahaha
