A similar situation happened to a friends dog where his nail broke down under the skin. I am not sure it these were the exact circumstances but her dog will most likely have to have surgery because the nail will become ingrown once it starts growing again.

I dont want to scare you because this may not be the case for your pup but I would call the vet and find out. You may need to do a consult but its better to be safe than sorry.
