If you want to test for shunt it is two blood tests. You fast your dog overnight and they draw blood in the morning. The dog eats and the blood is drawn two hours later.
Different vets prefer different methods for urine collection. Some let you bring it in and some don't. If they don't let you bring a sample (these are contaminated quite often) they will take it via catheter or cystocentesis (needle through the body wall into the bladder and no it doesn't hurt too bad).
