The females determine how many pups by how many eggs are dropped. Males determine the sex of the pups.

Day 31 is too soon, IMO to have an x-ray. However, at this stage, the vet will be able to tell for sure if she's pregnant or not.

If you're planning on doing an x-ray, wait until the last week. Pups should be fully developed and your vet can take the measurements of the heads vs. the diameter of her pelvis as to if she can safely deliver or not.

Bitches are pregnant for 9 weeks. One week for a dog is like 1 month for a human.
