He starts shaking all over and whining if I take him to any other room in the house or even if I put him on the couch in the living room. I don't want him to be unhappy so after waiting 5 or 10 minutes for him to calm down (and he doesn't) I usually take him back to his little area. I always take his blanket and favorite toys when I try to introduce him to new areas and I give him a treat, but he's so scared he wont even look at any of it.

Anyone have any ideas?
I don't have any actual experience with anything like that but from a couple of episodes of The Dog Whisperer dealing with dogs with similar problems I think you just got to take him where you want him to be at and wait long enough for him to calm down. This one dog in the show took over 30 minutes to calm down. Another clue is for you not to comfort him, he's already scared and when you comfort him he understands by that that he is right to be scared, just act normal ... no blankie, no toys, no cossetting.
