This is interesting. What I've found is that undigested protein happens only if feeding low-quality proteins or proteins that the animal is allergic to or slightly allergic to.
My cat, who was 20 at the time of Wylie's poo eating, had to be given pretty much whatever food she would eat, to keep her weight on. So, we took her OFF the premium stuff and gave her cheaper, lower quality canned food (bc that was what tasted good to her) - THAT was when Wylie wanted her poop!
Also, Wy went through a brief stage of eating his own poo - BUT as we made his diet better and better, he no longer wanted his poo.
Interestingly, as I've progressed from kibble-feeder, to homecooker, to fish-based diet, to raw feeder - their poops are smaller and NO LONGER smell - and that is because their bodies are using/digesting the protein, not just pooping it out, because it is now in a more bio-available form.
