My Romeo has done that a few times in the night, and both times, it turned out he was barking at something that had scared him. One night it was a balloon in the kitchen, and the other night it was a stuffed Dora the Explorer doll. I had to really watch him and follow him to figure out what it was. Once I got whatever he was barking at and put it up, he was fine. Believe me, I know how you feel, because he barked almost all night before I could figure out what in the world it was and everytime I'd get up, he'd stop, then I'd get back in bed and he'd bark again.
