My cat did this once on my carpet...right in front of me! This is usually their way of telling you that something isn't quite right. I brought him to the vet and he did have a UTI. However, I did have a cat once that simply would not use a litter box. I didn't realize this because she was going in our mud room that had brown carpeting. Only when it got warm did I notice the horrible smell. You cannot get rid of it! I tried EVERYTHING...nothing worked. We had to replace the rug, the plywood and the mop board in the corner where she went. We replaced the carpet with slate tile. She was hit and killed by a car when she was a year old. I was very sad but then on the other hand I was glad I didn't have a cat peeing on my carpet anymore. We did get another cat/kitten and when we brought him in the house he went right to that corner!! Even though we had replaced everything and put down slate tiles he went right to that corner and started sniffing. Cat urine is so strong he must have been able to smell it even though we couldn't. Sometimes you just have a dirty cat and sometimes they are trying to tell you something is wrong.

I hope he is ok.
