I got my Yorkie past his puppyhood, so I don't have experience with orkie puppies. However, I did have an American Bulldog puppy.
The potty training is difficult. You can never punis the dog unless you catch him in the act. First, try to clue in to his "potty-signals". The best way to train him is to nip the issue in the bud. If you see him sniffing around, take him out. Until he is older, you aways have to have an eye on him and be close enough to grab him, if you want 100% training. The moment you see him getting ready to pee, say a firm "NO", pick him up, and take him out. Throw a praise party when he goes outside. I personally think that you should never hit the dog.
As for biting. Don't say "NO" or anything else. I've found they don't help. I simply yelp to let the dog know that it hurt, and then turn my body away from him. Removing your attention is the worst punishment for him! If he pursues you and continues nipping, turn away, get up and leave the room for 30 seconds (or more depending on how long you can leave him alone before he becomes destructive). You want to come back into the room before he has the chance to be distracted by anything negative, otherwise he will associate that behaviour with you coming back.
Also, keep in mind that puppies nip. Teach him that it's unacceptable with humans, but keep in mind that it is not until about a year that they lose the nipping instinct all-together.
Hope this helps a bit. |
