My vet requires preop bloodwork for puppies undergoing anesthesia for the first time, new patients, and seniors (over six) unless they've had bloodwork in the past month.
Bile acid tests aren't routinely done, only if the liver values are elevated. It's generally recommended that anyone who buys a puppy whose breed is prone to liver shunts, MVD, etc. like Yorkies or Maltese make sure their breeder does a bile acid test before you bring your puppy home anyway. It's a very inexpensive test and can save you thousands and a lot of heartache.
I like to do yearly bloodwork anyway and twice yearly on senior dogs like my Lady. |
